An absolute architectural marvel, but you MUST understand the new layout before going!

I finally checked Hagia Sophia off my bucket list during my trip to Istanbul, and it truly takes your breath away. The sheer scale of the dome and the historic fusion of Christian mosaics and Islamic calligraphy are mind-blowing. Standing inside a structure that has witnessed over 1,500 years of history is a feeling you can't replicate anywhere else. However, as a foreign tourist, you need to know how the system works now because it changed recently. Foreign visitors no longer enter the main ground floor for free or through the main worship entrance. Instead, you pay a €25 entrance fee to access the upper gallery via a separate ramp. From up there, the view of the main hall and the architecture is incredible, and you get a much closer look at the famous surviving mosaics (like the Seraphim angels and the Deesis mosaic). That being said, if you only buy the gallery ticket, you cannot go down to the ground floor area where locals pray. I felt a bit disconnected looking down from above, but the historical value of the upper section is still worth every euro A few practical tips for fellow travelers based on my experience:Dress Code: Since it is an active mosque, women must cover their heads, and everyone must wear modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered). If you forget, you’ll have to buy a disposable scarf/robe at the entrance, which adds unnecessary cost.Avoid the Scams: Ignore the aggressive 'unofficial guides' lingering outside who promise to skip the line for you. Just buy your ticket at the official kiosks or online.Audio Guide: Bring your own headphones! There is a QR code system for a digital audio guide inside the gallery, but it's much easier to listen to if you have your own earbuds. It gets incredibly crowded, so my biggest advice is to go either very early in the morning right when it opens or later in the afternoon before sunset. It's a must-see, just manage your expectations regarding the modern tourist flow!"

Bitter-sweet experiences from my first solo trip to Istanbul (Sultanahmet)

Hi everyone! I'm James from London. I’ve wanted to see Istanbul my entire life, and last month I finally made it happen with a 5-day solo trip. I stayed in the Sultanahmet area. The city completely mesmerized me, but it also drained my energy a bit. Here are my honest observations:The Good:The Sheer Scale of History: Standing right between the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque was insane. You are literally in the middle of thousands of years of history. We just don't have this kind of atmosphere in the UK. Especially during the morning call to prayer, the mystical vibe in the square gave me absolute goosebumps.Genuine Turkish Hospitality: As I was walking past a small carpet shop, the owner invited me in. Even though I didn’t buy a single thing, he offered me free apple tea, and we chatted for half an hour about Istanbul’s history. The local people are truly warm-hearted.The Street Cats: As a cat lover, Sultanahmet Square was absolute heaven for me. Seeing how plump, well-cared-for, and loved these cats are by the locals really touched my heart. There were food and water bowls at literally every corner. The Bad:The 'Mosque is Closed' Scam: While walking towards Hagia Sophia, a well-dressed guy who spoke perfect English approached me. He said, "Hey mate, the mosque is currently closed for prayers, but if you want, I can take you to a hidden historical spot nearby that's open." Luckily, I had read about this on Reddit; these guys just want to lure you into their carpet or souvenir shops to pressure you into buying something. I politely said "No thanks" and walked away. The mosque wasn't closed at all, so watch out!Ticket Prices for Foreigners: Entrance fees for museums are incredibly expensive for non-residents (charged in Euros). If you plan on visiting more than three museums, definitely get the 'Museum Pass Türkiye'. Otherwise, buying individual tickets will absolutely destroy your wallet.Overly Aggressive Restaurant Touts: Walking down Divanyolu Avenue is exhausting because staff from every single restaurant jump out in front of you with a menu. They shout things like, "Hello my friend, where are you from?". After a while, it gets a bit claustrophobic. Your best bet is to put your headphones on and just ignore them.Overall Verdict: Istanbul is one of the most chaotic yet beautiful cities I have ever seen in my life. Just keep your eyes wide open for the tourist traps in Sultanahmet, and you'll have an unforgettable time!

Perfect Bosphorus backdrop, but come early for photos!

This is easily the most photogenic mosque in Istanbul. The Baroque architecture combined with the backdrop of the massive Bosphorus Bridge is absolutely stunning. Inside, it's small but filled with natural light from the large windows, making the pink calligraphy on the walls look beautiful. It is completely free to enter Photo Timing: It gets packed with Instagrammers by noon. Come at sunrise or late afternoon for the best light and fewer crowds.Dress Code: Like all mosques, women must cover their hair and everyone needs modest clothing. Free scarves are available at the door. The Famous Food: Right outside the mosque, you'll find a street dedicated to 'Kumpir' (massive stuffed baked potatoes). You cannot leave Ortakoy without trying one!It only takes 15 minutes to see the inside, but the view outside is unforgettable."

Breathtaking opulence and stunning Bosphorus views, but prepare for long security lines

Dolmabahce Palace is absolutely magnificent and shows a completely different side of Ottoman history compared to Topkapi Palace. The European-style architecture, the massive crystal chandeliers, and the gold-leaf ceilings are jaw-dropping. The highlight for me was the Grand Ceremonial Hall and seeing the room where Mustafa Kemal Ataturk passed away. Plus, the palace gardens sit right on the edge of the Bosphorus, offering incredible photo opportunities Tickets: Tickets for foreign tourists cost 1,050 TL and include the Main Palace (Selamlik), the Harem, and the Painting Museum.Audio Guide: A free audio guide is included with your ticket. You need to scan your physical passport or ID at the desk to get the device, so do not leave your passport at the hotel. No Photos Inside: Photography and filming are strictly forbidden inside the palace rooms. Guards are everywhere and they will warn you immediately if you take out your phone.Come Early: Security checks at the main gate create huge bottlenecks. Arrive around 09:00 AM to avoid waiting in line under the sun for an hour.It requires about 2.5 hours to see everything, but the sheer luxury of the palace makes it a must-visit in Istanbul.

Incredible 360-degree views of Istanbul, but watch out for the ticket price and narrow balcony!

Galata Tower offers arguably the best panoramic view of Istanbul, the Golden Horn, and the Bosphorus. The experience is well-organized: you take a modern elevator up to the 7th floor, and then walk up just two flights of stairs to reach the outdoor observation deck. Walking down floor by floor is great because each level serves as a museum showing artifacts and the history of the tower. The Ticket Shock: Admission for foreign tourists has risen significantly to €30 per person. Double-check if it fits your budget before joining the queue. The Balcony Bottleneck: The outdoor viewing ledge at the top is extremely narrow, making it hard to pass people. If you are claustrophobic or afraid of heights, the crowds up there might feel intense Beat the Crowd: Lines can wrap around the square for hours during sunset. Come early in the morning right when it opens at 08:30 AM to walk straight in Photo Spot: After your visit, grab a slice of the famous San Sebastian cheesecake at the cafes right next to the tower—it's a must-do! [1] (https://galatatower.com/tr/tickets) It is definitely expensive for a quick view, but seeing Istanbul from this high up is unforgettable.

İstiklal Caddesi

The beating heart of modern Istanbul, but be ready for massive crowds and stay alert!

Istiklal Avenue is a massive, historic pedestrian street that stretches from Taksim Square all the way down toward Galata. It is completely free to visit and truly is the beating heart of modern Istanbul, alive 24/7 with street musicians, historic buildings, endless shopping options, cafes, and restaurants. Standing in the middle of this street gives you a massive energy rush, and seeing the iconic vintage red tram slowly pass by through the crowd is a classic Istanbul moment. The Famous Tram Ride: The historic red tram (T2 line) runs the full length of the avenue. You can ride it using your regular Istanbulkart. It moves very slowly because of the people walking on the tracks, but it's a fun, nostalgic experience.Beware of Street Scams: This is a prime spot for tourist scams. Avoid anyone inviting you to a 'local bar or club' for a drink—they will trap you with an insanely high bill. Also, watch your pockets and bags carefully in the dense crowd.Explore the Side Passages: Don't just walk straight down. Step into the beautiful historic passages like Çiçek Pasajı (Flower Passage) or Atlas Passage, and visit the stunning St. Anthony of Padua Church hidden along the avenue. It is loud, overwhelming, and intensely energetic, but you haven't fully experienced the modern side of Istanbul until you walk down Istiklal!"
