Perched dramatically on a steep rocky hill along the Van-Hakkari highway, Hosap Castle (Hoşap Kalesi) is one of the most spectacular and well-preserved medieval fortresses in Eastern Anatolia. Built in 1643 by Mahmudi Süleyman Bey, a local Kurdish chieftain, this imposing stronghold looks as if it stepped straight out of a fantasy epic. As a highly recommended stop for heritage travelers exploring famous ancient places in Eastern Turkey, a visit to Hosap Castle rewards architecture lovers with its monumental circular entrance gate made of black and white cut stone, majestic defensive walls, and an elevated inner citadel that offers breathtaking panoramic views over the old Hosap village and the surrounding rugged valleys.
