Around 12 kilometres northwest of Osmaniye, Kastabala spreads across a valley beneath the hilltop walls of medieval Bodrum Castle. Its standing columns and hillside theatre offer a glimpse of an important city in ancient Cilicia, near the Ceyhan River. Start with the colonnaded street, where rows of columns mark a route once lined with shops and covered walkways. Then explore the theatre and the remains of baths and churches. Many of the city’s most prominent monuments date to the second and third centuries AD, while later buildings reveal how the settlement changed over time. Kastabala was also a religious centre devoted to Artemis Perasia. Its ancient name, Hierapolis, means “sacred city.” With Roman ruins below and a medieval fortress above, the setting makes its different layers of history easy to appreciate. Wear comfortable shoes for the uneven ground, and bring water and sun protection when exploring the open-air ruins.
