The beating heart of modern Istanbul, but be ready for massive crowds and stay alert!
Istiklal Avenue is a massive, historic pedestrian street that stretches from Taksim Square all the way down toward Galata. It is completely free to visit and truly is the beating heart of modern Istanbul, alive 24/7 with street musicians, historic buildings, endless shopping options, cafes, and restaurants. Standing in the middle of this street gives you a massive energy rush, and seeing the iconic vintage red tram slowly pass by through the crowd is a classic Istanbul moment.
The Famous Tram Ride: The historic red tram (T2 line) runs the full length of the avenue. You can ride it using your regular Istanbulkart. It moves very slowly because of the people walking on the tracks, but it's a fun, nostalgic experience.Beware of Street Scams: This is a prime spot for tourist scams. Avoid anyone inviting you to a 'local bar or club' for a drinkโthey will trap you with an insanely high bill. Also, watch your pockets and bags carefully in the dense crowd.Explore the Side Passages: Don't just walk straight down. Step into the beautiful historic passages like รiรงek Pasajฤฑ (Flower Passage) or Atlas Passage, and visit the stunning St. Anthony of Padua Church hidden along the avenue. It is loud, overwhelming, and intensely energetic, but you haven't fully experienced the modern side of Istanbul until you walk down Istiklal!"

Perfect Bosphorus backdrop, but come early for photos!
This is easily the most photogenic mosque in Istanbul. The Baroque architecture combined with the backdrop of the massive Bosphorus Bridge is absolutely stunning. Inside, it's small but filled with natural light from the large windows, making the pink calligraphy on the walls look beautiful. It is completely free to enter
Photo Timing: It gets packed with Instagrammers by noon. Come at sunrise or late afternoon for the best light and fewer crowds.Dress Code: Like all mosques, women must cover their hair and everyone needs modest clothing. Free scarves are available at the door. The Famous Food: Right outside the mosque, you'll find a street dedicated to 'Kumpir' (massive stuffed baked potatoes). You cannot leave Ortakoy without trying one!It only takes 15 minutes to see the inside, but the view outside is unforgettable."

A peaceful, car-free escape from Istanbul, but choose your island carefully!
If you need a break from Istanbul's chaotic traffic, the Princes' Islands are a perfect day trip. The archipelago consists of several islands, with Bรผyรผkada (the largest) and Heybeliada being the most popular. The best part is that all motorized vehicles are banned, so the air is clean and you only hear the sounds of bicycles and electric buses. The historic Ottoman-era wooden mansions lined along the streets are absolutely beautiful.
Getting There: Take the public ferry (ลehir Hatlarฤฑ) from Eminรถnรผ, Beลiktaล, or Kadฤฑkรถy. It is much cheaper than private tour boats and you can pay with your regular Istanbulkart. The ride takes about 1.5 hours.Getting Around: Since horse carriages (fayton) were banned for animal welfare, you now explore the islands using the municipal electric buses (ฤฐETT) or by renting a bicycle. Be prepared for some steep hills if you rent a bike!Avoid the Weekend Rush: Do not go on Saturdays or Sundays, especially in the summer. Local crowds pack the ferries and the islands to the point where it becomes overwhelming. Go on a weekday morning instead.Dining Tip: Restaurants right along the ferry pier are heavily overpriced and touristy. Walk a few streets inland to find better, authentic seafood and local bakeries.Itโs a wonderfully relaxed, nostalgic experience that feels like a completely different country!"
