Located in Sarıyer, on the southeastern edge of Belgrad Forest, Atatürk Arboretum is a peaceful natural retreat where visitors can walk among trees, ponds and landscapes transformed by the changing seasons. More than a conventional botanical garden, it is a living outdoor collection where different species of trees and woody plants are cultivated, preserved and studied for scientific and educational purposes.
The project began in 1949, and the arboretum received its present name in 1982 to mark the centenary of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s birth. Its extensive woodland contains native trees, plant species introduced from different parts of the world and small ponds. In autumn, golden and reddish leaves, reflections on the water and quiet forest paths create particularly beautiful scenes for nature lovers and photographers.
The best way to experience the arboretum is to slow down, follow the designated paths, pause beside the ponds and observe the variety of trees. Fresh green foliage makes spring appealing, summer brings deep shade, autumn offers a spectacular range of colours, and winter reveals the delicate shapes of bare branches.
Atatürk Arboretum is not a picnic park; it is a protected collection intended for the study and conservation of plants. Visitors should remain on designated paths, avoid damaging vegetation, take their rubbish with them and respect the tranquillity of the surroundings. For travellers seeking a quieter side of Istanbul, it offers a refreshing escape into nature.
