Standing on the Golden Horn between the historic neighbourhoods of Fener and Balat, St. Stephen Bulgarian Orthodox Church is one of Istanbul’s most distinctive architectural landmarks. Commonly known as the Iron Church, it was constructed using prefabricated iron components rather than conventional stone masonry. Its pale exterior, elegant domes and elaborate details create a striking silhouette along the waterfront.
The church’s story began in 1849, when Istanbul’s Bulgarian community sought a dedicated place of worship. After the original wooden church was destroyed by fire, the present building was constructed and opened for worship in 1898. Designed by Armenian-born architect Hovsep Aznavur, its iron components were manufactured in Vienna, transported via the Danube and the Black Sea, and assembled on the shores of the Golden Horn.
Combining Neo-Gothic and Neo-Baroque influences, the church features a cross-shaped plan and three domes. Inside, the iconostasis, religious icons and decorative details reveal the richness of Bulgarian Orthodox tradition. Following a major restoration between 2011 and 2018, the church reopened to visitors and worshippers.
A visit to the Iron Church offers more than an encounter with unusual engineering. It also provides a glimpse into the religious and cultural history of Istanbul’s Bulgarian community. Take time to admire the exterior from the waterfront and explore the surrounding streets of Fener and Balat. For architecture enthusiasts and travellers interested in Istanbul’s multicultural past, this is a memorable stop.
