A massive journey into Ottoman history, but don't skip the Harem and remember it's closed on Tuesdays!
If you want to understand the scale and power of the Ottoman Empire, Topkapi Palace is the place to go. Unlike European palaces that are usually just one massive building, Topkapi is a sprawling complex divided into four beautiful courtyards with gardens, pavilions, and holy relics. The views of the Bosphorus from the fourth courtyard are absolutely incredible and worth the walk alone! As of my visit, ticket pricing for foreign tourists has changed to a fixed Combined Ticket which costs 2,750 TL. The good news is that this ticket automatically includes the main palace grounds, the Hagia Irene church, AND the famous Harem section. Definitely do not skip the Harem; the intricate tile work and the history of how the Sultan's family lived was the absolute highlight of my entire day.
Crucial tips for anyone planning to visit:The Tuesday Trap: Make sure you plan your itinerary correctly because Topkapi Palace is completely closed on Tuesdays. I saw several confused tourists outside the gates who didn't check the calendar!Audio Guide & ID: A free audio guide is included with your ticket, which is great because there aren't many English signs inside. However, they require an official ID or Passport as a deposit to give you the device. Make sure you carry your physical passport with you; they won't accept a photo of it on your phone!Wear Comfortable Shoes: You will be doing a massive amount of walking on uneven cobblestones. It took me nearly 3.5 hours to see everything without rushing.
