Balıkesir reaches both the Aegean and Marmara seas and includes islands, beaches, olive-growing landscapes and thermal areas. Ayvalık, Cunda, Edremit, Erdek and the Kaz Mountains give the province several distinct travel bases.
May to October suits coastal trips, with July and August the busiest months. Spring and autumn are better for hiking and quieter sightseeing.
Intercity buses serve the main towns. A car is useful because coastal districts, islands and mountain attractions are widely separated.
