Located in Nallıhan district, northwest of Ankara, Nallıhan Bird Paradise lies where the Aladağ Stream meets the Sarıyar Dam reservoir. This important wetland provides feeding, nesting and sheltering grounds for a wide variety of birds. Its combination of shallow waters, reed beds, willow groves and rocky slopes creates a rich mosaic of habitats.
The landscape is just as striking as its wildlife. Layers of yellow, brown and reddish sedimentary rock create colourful formations that contrast with the water and surrounding hills. Birdwatchers and photographers can experience two remarkable subjects in one place: the movement of birds across the wetland and the dramatic colours of the terrain.
Official sources report that more than 190 bird species have been observed in the area. Herons, storks, cormorants and various waterbirds are among its inhabitants and visitors. Sightings vary with the season, water levels and migration patterns, so each visit can reveal something different.
Bring binoculars or a telephoto lens, keep a respectful distance from wildlife and avoid disturbing nesting areas. Spring and migration periods can be rewarding, while winter also brings waterbirds to the wider reservoir. Within reach of Ankara for a day trip, Nallıhan Bird Paradise offers a memorable escape for travellers interested in wildlife, nature photography and the quieter landscapes of inland Türkiye.
